County Junior Tournament, 27 April 2014

After a successful County netball season for the U14 and U16 teams, the end of the season was marked with a tournament on 27 April.

In a moment of madness COTTENHAM JAGUARS NETBALL CLUB volunteered to organise and host the event without, really knowing what we had let ourselves in for.  After a few weeks of booking courts, sending off applications and organising refreshments for the day, we found ourselves realising that whatever date you choose, someone, somewhere, will not be able to make it.  However, undeterred clubs around the County managed to enter 10 x U14 teams and 6 x U16 teams, which overall gave us an extremely busy and enjoyable day of netball.

Everyone arrived in good time and all the clubs set themselves up around the courts, met up with friends from other clubs and settled in ready for the first match at 10am.  The weather was such a bonus, you can organise something to the best of your ability but if the weather is lousy then it seems to cast a shadow over the whole day, that wasn’t the case we were fortunate to have good weather all day.

The County supplied us with a good number of umpires.  We organised various food outlets supplying freshly cooked pizza, ice creams and Esther’s tea, coffee and cake stall which made sure everyone was fed and watered.  We even had our own doctor on site, a very kind parent from COJAGS JUNIORS NETBALL CLUB volunteered her services for the day, so all in all I’m sure we had every angle covered.

All the girls behaved impeccably and every club should be extremely proud as to how the girls represented their clubs.  They played to the best of their abilities, every match giving everything they had, never giving up and at the end of the day the winners of the U14 and U16 groups were rewarded with wonderful brand new trophies that CoJags had provided for them.  There were also medals for the runners up.

Winners and Runners-Up:

Under 14   Under 16
  • Winners: COMBERTON
  • Runners-Up: COJAGS 89
  • 3rd Place: LEOPARDS

  • Winners: PANTHERS
  • Runners-Up: ROOKIES
  • 3rd Place: ROYSTON

On the same day the Spirit of Netball Award was presented to Sarah McLaughlin of City of Ely Netball Club.

Feedback from the clubs who had attended the day has been received, all with a positive note.  As always it takes a huge amount of organisation and we are very grateful for all the help from the CoJags club and parents of juniors, all of whom gave up their time voluntarily to make a very successful County tournament.
