Regional Satellite Tournament

22 October 2017

"I was coach of Cambridgeshire Chiefs (North 1) on Play day. The girls were all very supportive of each other as it was the first time that they had had any competitive match play together outside of the training sessions.

Over the course of the competition the girls took their losses with good grace and enjoyed their victories. They accepted my decisions to rotate players within the squad each game to ensure that everyone experienced as much match play as possible and keeping fresh legs for 100% effort each half. When not on court the girls supported their team mates from courtside. It was great to see existing players combining with those new to the North Satellite group and made me feel very excited for the future if they bonded so easily together this early in the training season.

During the lunch break it was lovely to see girls from both squads snuggling under the blankets to keep warm and laughing and getting to know each other better.

Once all rounds had been played we found ourselves in play off for 7-8 position, playing previous opposition Beds Tigers who beat us 11-7. Thankfully our shooters found some form and this time we were very pleased to take the victory over the Tigers 11-9 meaning that we finished the competition 7th out of 15 teams which was a fantastic result.

Stand out players on the day for me were Izzie Turnbull who played all over mid court and Nana Owusu-Ansah who was very strong in circle defence. The other players responded well to Maisie McPherson and Darcey Cameron as Captain and Vice. All in all, an exciting day with some great netball that has left us all looking forward to the next play day."

- Gill Stevens, Cambridge North "Chiefs"

"On a fresh windy morning, our 4 teams representing both North Cambs and South Cambs Satellite Academies enjoyed strong competitive matchplay against teams from Hertfordshire, Essex, Bedfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. For some it was their first outing wearing their representative kit, and dealing with nerves was a key factor. For the more experienced players, this was less of an issue and we saw some consistently strong performances throughout. All players showed significant improvement during the course of the morning and coaches were delighted with their effort and commitment."

- Charlotte Malyon, South Satellite Head Coach

"My first experience as a coach at the academy was a chilly, blustery, but fantastic one! The girls from the outset were very welcoming of this new face, they were respectful, pleasant and we discussed positions ensuring we rotated players giving a share of the court time so everyone could benefit from the experience.

We faced some tough competition and despite some heavy losses the girls remained focused, kept their heads up and never gave up. So early in the season this was a great opportunity for competitive game play and for the newer girls to gain some match play experience.

The girls all communicated well, they encouraged each other and worked well as a team in various combinations, as Gill said it was lovely to see them snuggled under the blankets at the lunch break together – I did treat them to some "haribos" which seemed to go down well and gave a boost of sugar for the next round of games! It was great to have so many parents stay and cheer the girls on as well so thank you for your continued support.

Scores below, unfortunately with a lack of shooters within the squad the goal lines don't necessarily reflect the continuous hard work the girls did on court carrying the ball through from their centre passes and numerous turnovers in defence. However, a big well done for those who stepped into the shooting circle despite this not being your preferred position, this showed flexibility and commitment to your team.

Game 1 v Cambs Chiefs (tough first game stepping out against your training partners!) L 2 v 9
Game 2 v Herts 1 L 3 v 21
Game 3 v Essex L 2 v 11
Game 4 v Beds Tigers L 1 v 9
Game 5 v Suffolk Blue W 7 v 3
Game 6 (play off for 13 th / 14 th Position) v Norfolk Red L 4 v 9
Game 7 (extra game for 14 th / 15 th Position) v Suffolk Red W 10 v 3

I was very honoured to be part of the team supporting the girls on the day it was a real pleasure the day flew by so quickly. Stand out players on the day for the Griffins were:

Elena Baldry (Captain) who lead with total enthusiasm all day both on and off court, her game play was instrumental in securing turnovers and for continually positioning herself well throughout court.

Libby Bingham (vice captain) who stepped out of her comfort zone and into the shooting circle for many of the games.

Joy Boampong for her outstanding relentless defence, turning over many balls both in the defensive third but also out in centre court as GD.

Looking forward to our next outing, we’ve some scores to settle girls!"

- Sally Smith, Cambs Griffins, North Satellite Volunteer Coach
